day twenty-eight: inspired by a flag

Hey everyone!
Today is the 28th day of the challenge and the theme is INSPIRED BY A FLAG.
The flags were quite a trend last season. They were on jeans, shirts, shoes and, of course, nails.
I chose the Union Jack flag, because I realised that I've never done it before and because I just love how the colors go together.

Sorry for the blurry photo, but it was already too late when I noticed it :(
I used Essence Midnight Date as a base for all nails but the one on the ring finger. For the ring finger, I used a white base and then painted the flag with Essence Midnight Date and Flormar Supershine Miracle Colors U14. I know it's a bit messy. I wanted to use striping tape, but the white is a slow dryer.

day twenty-seven: inspired by artwork

Hello everyone!
Today is the 27th day of the challenge and the theme is INSPIRED BY ARTWORK.
There are a lot of paintings that I had in mind for this challenge, but one of them has a special place in my heart - Starry Night by Van Gogh.

I know that it's nowhere near the actual painting, but it was really fun to do :)

I made a mistake when I started. I should have painted a lighter blue as a base, but I painted the nails with a dark navy blue and the acrylic paint simply faded away later on. I had to use a lot of coats to get it to show.

I did it on fake nails (obviously). Even though it's not too much alike the painting, I like how it turned out. After all, it's inspired by an artwork.

day twenty-six: inspired by a pattern

Hello everyone!
Today's challenge is INSPIRED BY A PATTERN and it's yet another theme that I love, because I love patterns. When it comes to patterns, stamping is my favorite technique.

I used Essence Irreplaceable as a base and stamped the houndstooth design from the plate BM-322 using a black polish.
I've had this combo in my mind for a while and I finally made it happen :)

Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow!

day twenty-five: inspired by fashion

Hello everyone!
Today is the 25th day of the challenge and the theme is INSPIRED BY FASHION. I'm so close to the end and I must say that I'll be glad when I finish, not because I'm not having fun, but because of the lack of time I'm experiencing right now.
Fashion can always be a great inspiration for nail artists because there are tons of combinations, patterns and whatnot that we can use.

Not so long ago, while doing some window shopping I noticed this lovely shirt with bows that stole my heart. Seriously. It was beautiful! But, I couldn't buy it, so I have no reference photo to show you :(

I used Rimmel Alaska as a base and stamped the bow from BM-317 with Rimmel Aye, Aye Sailor. I'm loving this combination and the way it turned out :)

day twenty-four: inspired by a book

Hey everyone!
Yesterday was the 24th day of the challenge and the theme was INSPIRED BY A BOOK, but I couldn't post because I was in class all day. I'll post today's manicure right after this one, just so you know.

Initially, I wanted to go with George Martin's book series called "A Song of Ice and Fire", but it was more complicated and I had no time to do it. Instead I went with a very simple manicure inspired by the cover of George Orwell's "1984". I must admit that I haven't read this book, yet. I started reading it and got halfway through, but I was pretty busy, so I didn't finish it. But, I will as soon as possible.

You know how books can have many covers, but I went with the simplest, which was the British first edition cover. It looks like this.

What I did was the following. I painted all of my nails with a dark green polish. While that was drying, I made a 50-50 mix of green and white acrylic paint and painted the numbers. Lastly, I added top coat to smooth out the acrylic paints.

day twenty-three: inspired by a movie

Hey everyone!
I'm really glad you liked yesterday's manicure so much :)
Today is the 23rd day of the challenge and the theme is INSPIRED BY A MOVIE.
I chose Star Wars.

A short description.
Thumb: R2-D2
Index: Boba Fett
Middle: The galaxy :)
Ring finger: A stormtrooper, though it could have turned out better.
Pinky: I shouldn't say that I was out of ideas because there are so many characters and scenes from the movies that can be put on a nail, but I was out of painting space and out of time, so I smudged on a little Chewbacca :)
By the way, I did them on fake nails. I tend to make the more complex manicures on fake nails because I like to save them as a memory (besides photographing them). I'd usually wear them for a longer period, but the challenge doesn't allow me :(

That's it for today! I have a great idea for tomorrow's challenge, but unfortunately I might post it a day later because I have classes from 12pm to 9pm. Monday couldn't suck more.

day twenty-two: inspired by a song

Hey everyone!
It's day 22 of the challenge and today's theme is INSPIRED BY A SONG.
Around 2 months ago the Internet was amazed by this Korean performer called PSY with his song Gangnam Style. The video is absolutely hilarious! So, I had to try and make a manicure inspired by the song :)
I'll link the video below, just in case you haven't seen it.

I painted it according to the following photo.

I'm not going to explain the painting process because it took a while and I'd probably have to write a huge list of used products :)

I had some weird reflections, so I took a flash photo as well.

My absolute favorite is the horse on the pinky :D

Thanks for reading & sorry for the short post, but I guess the photos speak for themselves.

day twenty-one: inspired by a color

Hello everyone!
Today is the 21st day of the 31 day challenge and the theme is INSPIRED BY A COLOR. I only have 10 more days left for the challenge, which is awesome because my lesson timetable is absolutely crazy. I have plenty of free time, but I use it to sleep :D

Anyway... I was looking through some other blogs that did the challenge after me and some of them thought that the "inspired by a color" thing was supposed to be inspired by the name of the color or the name of the polish. I figured that made more sense than anything else, so I went for the name of the color :)

I chose "tea rose". My favorite shade of pink. I believe it was Eyeko that had a polish named Tea Rose, but I'm not sure right now. Anyway, I used Rapsodi 313, which is a perfect tea rose polish :)

I know that the "tea" part doesn't refer to actual tea, but I couldn't resist painting a cute tea cup :) As usual, I used polka dots to make it even cuter :) Everything was done with acrylic paints (except for the small polka dots on the cup).

day twenty: water marble

Hello everyone!
Today is the 20th day of the challenge and the theme is WATER MARBLE.
Water marble is a pain in the ass for me. It's the technique I despise the most.

What a great intro, don't you think?
As you can see, even on fake nails I can't get a nice water marble design. It's nice and abstract, but those bubble holes drive me nuts.
Enough for today.

day nineteen: galaxy nails

Hey everyone!
It's the 19th day of the challenge and the theme is GALAXY nails.
If you follow me for a while, you'll know that I've already done a bunch of these manicures. Today I tried to get the appearance of a galaxy by doing some layering.

I started off with Essence Ticket To The Show as a base. Then, I layered some polishes on top in the following order: Maybelline Sugar Crystals, Essence City That Never Sleeps and Miss Selene 165. I finished it off with a coat of Gosh Matte top coat.

Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow!

day eighteen: half moons

Hey everyone.
It's day 18 of the challenge and I'm already so tired I can barely think of a simple manicure and the complex ones are yet to come.
My nails are extremely short again. Not that they grew too much the last time, but I had to cut them down again because I broke one while I slept. I'm seriously starting to suspect that I'm a sleepwalking ninja of some sort. I can't think of any other possible explanations for this situation ;)

Last year I told you how much I hate doing half moons. I'm seriously incapable of doing simple manicures such as french or half moons. Not to mention my natural shape of the nails. They are wide and half moons look hideously on them. Period.
I didn't skip the challenge, though.

I did the half moons with a large dotting tool, because I didn't have any french tip guides. I messed the index finger a bit, but nothing too scary. I used Essence Flamingo Rose as a base and did the moons with Gabrini Pacific 04.

By the way, I went to my first university class today. All I can say is that everything went better than expected, considering the fact it was the shittiest subject of them all - maths. I have better hopes for tomorrow :)

day seventeen: glitter

Hey guys!
Today is the 17th day of the challenge and the theme is GLITTER.
Possibly one of the easiest challenges, because you can sometimes add a bunch of glittery polishes and have an amazing manicure. That's exactly what I did for today's theme because I didn't have much time to do anything special.
Before I begin with the post, just a small heads up. My first semester in university started today and right now I don't really have any mixed feelings or anything. My schedule is not that packed, except for Monday which I'll probably hate even more as of today :) Anyway, what I'm trying to say... I'll try to post as much as possible and most of all I'd be happy if I finish this challenge as I should, but I'd like to devote myself more to my education. So, I hope you don't mind if I vanish and suddenly show up again, but that's the way it might be from now on.

And now a bit more stuff that have to do with the post...

I must mention that I added a coat of the Essence Peeling Base Coat. It's a glue-ish kind of mixture that you put on your nails before you do your nails and later on you peel it of instead of using acetone. This is a great way to remove glitter because you know how much that sucks. It's absolutely harmless to your nails, so don't worry about that. The downside is that water can affect the ending result, especially hot water. I'd advise you to use it if you're not planning to take a shower after you do your nails. Another thing that I should probably mention is that I read in another blog that its ingredients are more or less the same as in kids' glue (sometimes labeled as PVA glue), so this is a cheaper option. I found this out after I bought the one from Essence. For a comparison, the one from Essence costs around $2.7 for 8ml and it's probably limited because it comes with the Ready For Boarding TE, while the PVA glue that I found costs $2.4 for 90ml (which is incredibly cheap!). And the cool thing is that you're probably going to need to make it runnier by adding some water and that will increase the amount of DIY peel off base coat you get and it will dry faster.

Anyway, for the manicure I used Flormar Miracle Colors U08 and added a coat of Essence Blue Addicted on top.

I made a mistake and I showered after I did my nails. Washing my hair does quite a damage to my manicures as it's very thick and long anyway, but with the peel off base coat it was a recipe for failure.

In conclusion, I'd advise you to use this base coat, especially when you don't have remover around or you want to wear a glittery manicure, but bear in mind that it might not last longer than a day or two.

day sixteen: tribal

Hey everyone!
Today is the 16th day of the challenge and the theme is TRIBAL.
I had so much to do today I can't even begin to tell you, so I won't :)
I chose to do a stamping manicure, again... I wanted to make a freehand tribal as it looks way better that way even if you screw it up, but I had absolutely no free time today and I just grabbed a couple of polishes and a stamping plate and it was done.
I knew that it would take me a lot of time to do a freehand design, because last time I did one on my friend's nails and it was super detailed and crazy, but it took around 2 hours to finish.

I painted all of my nails with a white nail polish and then used polishes Rapsodi Pacific 13, Gabrini Elegant Mirror Colors M13 and Maybelline Urban Lemon to make a gradient on the stamping plate BM-315. And that's it :)

Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow, hopefully with a better manicure.

day fifteen: delicate print

Hello everyone!
I'm already halfway through the challenge and today's theme is DELICATE.
I've been waiting for this theme for a long time, because I knew exactly what I wanted to do (and for some reason I didn't want to do it before this day came). Also, I got a swatch for you today! I have a bunch of swatches coming up, but I only want to post one post per day, so you'll see them after the challenge :)

I know, I know, it's barely visible, but I was going for really delicate :)
I painted my nails with Rimmel London Alaska (swatches below) and then I stamped the paisley design from the plate BM-315 using Flormar 112. The paisley design is one of my favorites from the new Bundle Monster set. It's incredibly detailed, I can't even explain how good it looks.

Rimmel London Alaska is a milky nude polish with a jelly finish. I painted 2 thick coats for the swatches and it turned out pretty opaque, though there is a visible nail line. But, polishes such as Alaska aren't made to be opaque, so I didn't bother painting tons of coats just to get it right. One coat is perfect for the classic french manicures, if you work in a place where there are strict rules about nails or maybe if you just want to leave the crazy colors aside for a while :) I'm going to try a jelly sandwich using this baby after the challenge.

I don't know why the color drop turned out that way, but it's not color accurate at all!

Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow!

day fourteen: flowers

Hello everyone!
Today is the 14th day of the challenge and the theme is FLOWERS.
I don't really like wearing flowers on my nails, but wearing them in an unconventional way is always so fun for me :) I have made yet another stamping manicure and I really love how it turned out!

I painted all of my nails except the ones on the thumb and ring finger with a light grey base - Golden Rose Paris 134. Then, I painted the rest of the nails with a tea rose pink - Rapsodi 313. After the base polish dried, I stamped a barbed wire design using Essence Movie Star on the grey nails and a rose design on the pink nails using Essence True Love. Both designs are from plate BM-323.
I don't know why, but I absolutely love how the barbed wire and the roses go together :)

Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow!

day thirteen: animal print

Hello everyone!
Today is the day 13 of the challenge and the theme is ANIMAL PRINT.
I was wondering how can I avoid the usual animal prints that are trending in nail art.
Then I realised that I haven't done any snakeskin manicures :)

I used Deborah Milano Pistache Green as a base. Then I stamped the pattern from BM-215 using three different colors - first Golden Rose Paris 73, then Essence Movie Star and Flormar 112 on top.

I really love how it turned out & I can't wait to do it again after the challenge, so I can wear it longer than a day.
Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow!

day twelve: stripes

Hello everyone!
How are you all doing today?
It's day 12 of the 31 day challenge and today's theme is STRIPES.

Not a big fan of stripes. Actually, I  am, but painting them is always such a pain in the ass. I'd probably be able to paint something really complex, but stripes? Nope, a real challenge for me.
I wanted to concentrate this challenge on my freehand nail art, just so that I could get better at it. I did a manicure with freehand zig-zag lines and it was so horrible I decided not to post it.
What do I do when I fail at freehand nail art? I grab my stamping equipment :)

I still went for zig-zag, though. I used plate BM-201 and stamped with Avon Coral Bikini (ring finger and thumb) and Rimmel London Aye, Aye Sailor (all other fingernails), on a white base. And that's about it.

Excuse my ultra short posts lately.
Thanks for reading!

day eleven: polka dots

Hello everyone!
It's about time I got to the POLKA DOTS theme of this challenge! I already made like a ton of other polka dot manicures, but you can never have enough dots!

Yup, I went for strawberries, mainly because I've never done strawberries on my nails. I used Gabrini Elegant Mirror Colors M15 as a base. Then, I painted the leaves using a dark green acrylic. While that was drying, I used a yellow acrylic to make the polka dots. When the dots were done, I mixed a drop of white color in the green one and made a lighter green and did some highlights on the leaves. Finally, I used a very thin brush and some black acrylic to outline the leaves.

You may notice that the black outline is a bit crooked. That's because of my striping brush. It's very old and it's been through a lot :) I'm getting a replacement soon enough.

I absolutely love how this turned out. I hate the fact that tomorrow I have yet another challenge and I'll have to remove it :(
Thanks for reading!

day ten: gradient

One third down, two more to go :)
I'm almost afraid of the fact that this challenge is going too easy for me. On the other hand, I've been blogging for a year and I can edit, write and post pretty fast now. Today's theme is GRADIENT, one of my favorites I must confess.

Sorry for the blurry photo, but I noticed after I had taken the photos and to be honest I was kind of lazy so I didn't bother to re-shoot them.
For today's manicure I used a black polish as a base and made a gradient with Flormar Miracle Colors U14. This beautiful nail polish looks great by itself, but even better on top of a black base. I'm going to do a full manicure after this challenge so that you can see what I'm talking about. Until then, you can enjoy in these photos :)

The great thing about this polish is that it has red and golden particles in a red jelly base, but when you apply it over black the jelly base sort of blends in and isn't visible anymore, so you get tons of red and golden speckles over the black base.

day nine: rainbow

Hey everyone!
Today's theme for the 31 day challenge is RAINBOW.
I don't know what's with me and the dots during this challenge, but I've already done a couple of manicures with dots and I haven't even got to the 'polka dot' theme :)
Anyway, this year's manicure is more subtle than the one from last year. I didn't feel like wearing rainbow colored nails for some reason.

So, I was aiming for a trail of dripping colors forming a rainbow. I'm not sure if I got it right, but it's still cute.
I painted a white base and used the following polishes for the dots:

dark blue - Gabrini Elegant 352
light blue - Golden Rose Paris 204

day eight: metallic

Hey everyone!
It's day 8 of the 31 day challenge and today's theme is METALLIC nails.
I got tons of metallic nail polishes because I simply adore them and I can wear them anytime of the year.
Not so long ago my go-to silver stamping polish, Avon Silver Foil, got empty. It truly was a sad day, as it has been discontinued for a long, long time. Naturally, I went on a replacement polish searching adventure and found one by Flormar that's not a perfect dupe, but does the trick at stamping. More about the polish itself below today's manicure :)

Yes, yet another accented ring finger. It's kind of my thing for 2012 :)
Okay, so I painted all of my nails with Flormar 112, leaving the ring finger blank. I took a white and a mint shade and I started doing the so called 'fishtail' design.
I can't begin to describe how well these three colors go together! I kind of messed it up at the tip of my nail, but that is because I was so impatient!
Learn from my mistake & wait for the coats to dry :)

As for the polish... Flormar 112 is a silver foil, opaque in one single coat, but as always - 2 for the photo. It does a great job at stamping, so if you're in need of a silver stamping polish and Flormar is available in your country I give you two thumbs up! As I mentioned in the intro of this post, it is very similar to Avon Silver Foil, but it's kind of streaky. Nothing scary, though. The streaks are barely visible. I think that I'm going to be using this one a lot in the following manicures :)

Thanks for reading & stay tuned for tomorrow's manicure! :)

day seven: black & white

Wow, I can't believe it's been a week since I started the challenge!
So far, it's going pretty easy :)
Today's theme is BLACK & WHITE.

I realised that I haven't stamped in a while, so I figured I'd do a simple stamping manicure today.

I painted every nail with black polish, except for the ring finger which I painted with a white one. Then, I stamped a black bow on top of the white polish using the m59 stamping plate from BornPrettyStore.
I'm pretty satisfied with how this turned out :)

Thanks for reading & stay tuned for tomorrow's manicure :)

day six: violet

Hello everyone!
Today's theme of the 31 day challenge is VIOLET.

I decided to do a funky french design. I started off with Essence Boys Are Back In Town and made a scalloped french manicure using a big dotting tool. Then, using a smaller dotting tool I made a couple of dots using Avon Loving Lavender. Lastly, I added in a coat of Maybelline Sugar Crystals and that was it :)

I couldn't photograph the edge properly as I had some bad reflections, but I think that this close up might give you a better view :)

Thanks for reading & see you tomorrow!

day five: blue

Hello everyone!
Today is the fifth day of the 31 day challenge and the theme is BLUE
To my surprise Essence's Ready For Boarding TE was brought here not so long ago and I couldn't stop myself for buying Via Airmail! (a little more about this polish below the photos of today's manicure).

After I painted two coats of Essence Via Airmail!, while the polish was still wet I applied some of these huge round silver studs. They're this big because they're meant to be glued on to clothing and such, but they were very cheap and I wanted to try them on my nails.

Essence Via Airmail! is a periwinkle blue creme. It's opaque in 2 coats. I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more blues, but then again I have no periwinkle blue polish, so I had to buy it ;)
The photos above aren't color accurate (for some reason).

day four: green

Hello everyone!
Today is a very special day. Wanna know why? Because it's my first ever participation in the Polish Days event! I decided to put it all in the same post and go along with the fourth theme of the challenge which is GREEN nails. On the other hand, the theme of Polish Days is GEOMETRY.
Ever since I got the e-mail about the theme of Polish Days I knew that I was going to try and make my own triangle decals. I've been whining about triangle shaped glitter ever since I started this polish craze of mine, but I haven't had much luck in finding anything like it.

Here's what I did. First, I made a rectangle of black polish on a plastic bag and left it overnight to dry.
Note: Because I used a matte black polish, it dried very fast and leaving it overnight was wrong because it made it very fragile and hard to work with. After the rectangle was dry, I cut up little triangles using my smallest pair of scissors. When the triangles were done I proceeded to the actual manicure.
I painted my nails with Essence Lime Up!. While the polish was still wet, I applied the triangles on each of my nails. After I made sure they were stuck properly, I added in some white dots to fill in the space. Don't forget to finish with a top coat when using this technique!

If you ever try to make your own decals, just make sure that you get them ready first and then paint your nails, because it can get messy.

Thanks for reading & stay tuned for tomorrow's challenge!

day three: yellow

Hello everyone!

Today's theme of the 31 day challenge is YELLOW
I wanted to do something cute and simple and I chose dots :) I mean, is there anything cuter than dots?
I didn't want to wear only yellow, so I added in some pink as well.

For the index and pinky I used Maybelline Urban Lemon (scroll down for swatches) and for the rest of the nails I used Essence Flamingo Rose.
I used the same polishes to do the dots, as well.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted classic polka dots, or just random dots. I ended up with random :)

Maybelline Urban Lemon is a very bright yellow (photo below is more color accurate than the others). It has a jelly-like finish, but I'd still list it as a creme. It's more or less opaque in 2 coats, but it's very likely that you're going to experience some streaking or a visible nail line. It's quite hard to work with, but I suppose that 3 coats would do more than just fine. I like how this goes with my tan. It doesn't make my skin look weird at all.

Thanks for reading & stay tuned for tomorrow's challenge!
